Is There Such A Thing As Carrot Oil?

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

A week ago I attended a on campus dorm program about natural hair, more specifically about dreads. The speaker, Malaika Tamu Cooper, of Dreadz n Headz espoused a number of assertions in regards to natural hair. One of these things was that there is no such thing as carrot oil. Basically she implied that one never got oil residue from carrots so how exactly does one get oil from a carrot?

I must say she had me there. It seemed to be a good point. I just took it for granted and assumed there was oil to be had from carrots. Isn’t there oil to be had from everything?

This got me to searching. As best as I can understand, it isn’t so much that there is oil ground or separated from the carrot but more that the nutrients/ oils are lifted into a carrier oil like say olive oil.

See below for the recipe that I found on eHow.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Natural olive oil
  • Food processor or grater
  • Pan or crockpot
  • Strainer
  • Storage container

1. Peel and grate two to four carrots. Grate with hand grater or food processor.

2. Cover carrots with natural olive oil in pan or crockpot.

3. Cook carrots in the olive oil until they are tender and the olive oil has turned orange.

4. Pour mixture through strainer into storage container. You now have carrot oil for use in a facial mask or in soap or lotion mixtures.

5.  Keep carrot oil refrigerated between each use.

So there isn’t really oil of carrot but oil of carrot’s essence.
