Reporter Jawn Murray Calls Calls Black Women “Militant” and “Nappy-Headed”

Monday, October 25, 2010

One can only hope that Jawn Murray gets the “joke” when someone calls out black men with ghettified English names. John- Jawn, get it? Nothing wrong with it but it is very easy to utilise.

See below for the reasons for my disgust.

From ForHarriet.com

On Wednesday, October 20, Jawn Murray, an entertainment reporter for AOL’s Black Voices and contributor to the Tom Joyner Morning Show, sent out this tweet:

Certainly, Mr. Murray could have expressed his enthusiasm for Tyler Perry’s latest work without insulting Black women or natural hair. The language was unnecessarily offensive.  And when Black women pushed back, Murray followed up with this:

In light of Jawn Murray’s employment by media outlets which claim to cater to the needs and interests of African-Americans, his statements are unacceptable.  That is why For Harriet is circulating a petition to demand an apology from Mr. Murray.

Mr. Murray made a mistake. An apology is not too much to ask for.

While we attend to the greater ills that plague Black women like the deadliest breast cancers and domestic violence, we cannot continue to ignore the constant denigration that we receive.

UPDATE: JAWN MURRAY HAS ISSUED AN APOLOGY.

If you are unsatisfied with Mr. Murray’s apology, contact VP of AOL Black Voices Tariq Muhammad via email tariq.muhammad@teamaol.com or via phone (917) 606 4772.

Many thanks to MadameNoire.com for picking up the story.

Not surprised to see that this debate continues even after his (feigned?) apology. It didn’t seem to come from a place of sincerity. Some sensitivity training is in order, perhaps?

Yet, another example of the self hating negro (nigga), spreading hate about black women.

He has no business to insult women of color and also women with natural hair by his statement. Looking closely at his pictures he appears to have similar hair textures. But more importantly what does this say directly about him and him being a black male? He should not be voicing this sort of opinion under a representative voice for Black Community. The fact he used “angry” and “nappy headed” woman all in one sentence is offensive, derogatory, and pushes the movement backwards than forward. If he wants controversy, this is not the way to do it. Plus I wonder if Tyler Perry would be offended knowing he is calling all black sistas out regardless natural hair, relaxed, locs, braids, etc. It is a slap. Militant is like we are being forms of rebels with our natural hair. We are far from this. He needs to embrace instead of reject.
